I submitted four designs for consideration and was ecstatic that one rang a bell for the United States Mint. Originally intended to be viewed on its side to enhance the visuals for Baer’s handball game this coin can also be twisted counterclockwise for legibility. Ralph Baer’s brown box inspired years of games played on everything from computers, handheld devices, to the family’s old television. In addition, much of his work made its way under the Christmas trees of many. At home, my brother, the music master, would breeze through Simon Says with ease while I would howl in frustration after failing the second round, much to my family’s amusement. Regardless of my inability to keep up with the melodic tones, I kept trying. Mostly because I loved pressing the big glowing buttons with my small hands. I wonder if Ralph Baer realized the incredible impact he was having on entertainment seekers of all ages. As I researched more about the man and his innovation I was thrown back in time, remembering the vast assortment of video games inspired by his creation. I recalled stealing away to my friend’s house to play Pong on her dad’s Apple. I think it was the only computer in the neighborhood at the time. In the summer I’d hike up our small street, run down the gigantic hill to my aunt’s and uncle’s house where I would hang a right and slow my pace until the end of the lane. As a kid, It took a while to get there but it was worth it. Then there were the arcades. Synthetic ’80’s music rang through the air as we would hit the machines at Park City Mall in our oversized shaker-knit sweaters and jelly shoes. I distinctly remember the weight of tokens in my hand and the feeling of exhilaration it inspired. The smell of the mall, the weight of the tokens, and the flickering lights of the arcade was a memorable conglomeration of senses. This is what I creatively tapped into when working on the sketches. The arcade token symbolizes the inspiration of Baer’s invention tapping into a moment in time and power of the game. Carrying that over to an actual coin just seemed right. The addition of the words “Player One” was something I felt strongly about incorporating. It seemed incredibly appropriate. Not only was Baer the inventor and mastermind behind this juggernaut of this innovation but he was also the first one to play the game.
